There she was. Across the small rift she was standing in the shimmering snow, so gentle and light that she seemed to leave no tracks behind her as she stepped closer to the rift.
“Don’t go any closer!” James shouted across the rift, clutching his hands to the mountain against which he leaned.
She stopped and gazed at him. Her long, icy blonde hair fluttered in the wind, as did her thin, azure satin dress. With her blue, dreamy eyes she stared right into him, he thought, and as her lips moved in a whisper, he could hear her silky voice as if she was whispering into his ear:
“Save me, James. Save me.”
His teeth were chattering, the falling snow half blinded him, and he had nearly lost the feeling in his legs. Yet, his mind was urging him, pushing him to use the last of his powers and jump across the rift.
Could he manage the jump? It wasn’t far across, just about two metres. The shelf just next to him would make a decent runway. What held him back was the height. The rift wasn’t wide, but, below it, a hundred-metre drop opened up. It seemed to pull him down with a gravitational force of its own whenever he peeked into it.
“Don’t look down, you fool.” he told himself. “Never look down.”
He let go of the cliff and walked out on the shelf. He backed up as far back as he could, and then he ran. He ran with every last bit of energy he had left in his body. The pain from the wound in his left leg faded away.
“Save me, James”, her voice whispered in his ear.
Only two metres across. He would make it.
“Save me.” Läs mer ”The Lady in Blue (2012)”
